The brief was to provide a public art gallery and contemporary concert hall on the vacant city centre site, but to retain the allowances for an equestrian event and circus which utilise the site on occasion throughout the year.

Our solution was to place the concert hall into an artificial lake at the south end of the square, with the art gallery forming a linear element along the western edge.

The concert hall consists of two solid elements housing the two auditoriums with an atrium space in the void between.

The art gallery is a simple linear glass box set in front of a row of existing trees, whose scale makes the glass construction appear fragile. At the north end of the square, the minimalist form of the glass box loosens and creates a waterwall which feeds an artificial stream running alongside the gallery, spilling into the ‘lake’ in which the concert hall rests.
