2004 - competition entry
oldham housing

The principle aspiration for the scheme is to provide a good quality residential development on the former Granville Mill site in Oldham. The development provides a mix of affordable three, four and two bedroom over two and three storeys across the site achieving a density of more than 50 houses per hectare.

Lengthening life expectancies and more diverse family units create a need for housing which can adapt to changing needs. Dwellings that are thoughtfully designed, flexible and extendable enable the owners to accommodate changes without the need to relocate.

Environmental sustainability will be a priority from the start with the objective to make buildings and infrastructure with reduced energy demands. This should reduce costs for residents and make sustainability the norm, not a lifestyle choice.

The proposals should represent value for money with best value meaning, well designed internal and external spaces, high quality materials, and whole life cycle costing considered.

A high quality streetscape with unity of form, composition and materials helps to develop a strong community identity and has the ability to improve the quality of life in Oldham and make Granville Mill the best place to live.
