piccadilly gardens

Following an open competition, Stephenson Bell were the only Manchester based architects in a shortlist of five selected to present detailed proposals for a mixed use development comprising a ‘state of the art’ office building, retail space and an apartment building.

The objective was to create contemporary buildings which respond to and continue the urban grain of the City streets, in particular Portland Street, whilst providing an elegant edge to the new city garden designed by Tadao Ando.

The buildings create a permeable edge to allow movement and views into and out of the gardens. Materials and scale of the proposals respond to the immediate context, whilst integrating historical site features into the design.
